Kevin & The Blues Groovers – ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues’
BASINSTREETRECORDS.COM
So he’s 23. And this is his debut album. But if I didn’t tell you that, I’ll bet you’d think Kevin Gullage (Kevin & The Blues Groovers) has been around for a good long time. Sure he’s got that childhood prodigy thing going on — keyboards and songwriting too. But he sings with more style and flavor than any 23-year-old I know. (Definitely worth a listen.)
Larkin Poe – “Blood Harmony”
YOUTUBE.COM
This could be the theme song for the Lovell sisters, aka Larkin Poe. “Blood Harmony, ” the title track for their November album. It’s their story and it’s their musical life. It’s also a great tribute to their roots. Not too many videos match up with their songs as well as this one does.
The Black Keys Are Here To ‘Boogie’
BOSTONGLOBE.COM
“The Black Keys are a welcome reminder that some artists still dive into music for the pure love of it, not for fame or fortune.” Maybe that’s because these guys have been pals since they were kids and don’t take themselves too seriously. In any event, their interviews are as interesting as their music.
So True…So Very True!
Dennis Johnson – ‘Revelation’
DENNISJOHNSONSLIDE.COM
Dennis Johnson has a reputation for knowing his way around slide guitar and he certainly proves it on his new album, Revelation. If slide’s your thing, you’ll love this album. Every song grooves too (thanks to Anton Fig on drums). I loved Bob Fridzema’s piano and B3 work too.
Marcus King – “Blood On The Tracks”
YOUTUBE.COM
Every video/single released from Marcus King’s upcoming album Young Blood (due Aug 26th) seems better than the last. This is great power trio stuff. And he’s hitting the road heavy too. Shows are scheduled just about every other day. Whew! It’s looking like it’s gonna be a big year for Mr. King.
Meet Ghalia Volt, The Electrifying One-Woman Blues Band
GUITARWORLD.COM
While many bands sat out the entire Covid pandemic, Belgian blues guitarist Ghalia Volt had an out-of-the-box solution for traveling with a band when countries began to reopen: She simply became one herself. It proved a liberating creative experiment that led to her 2021 album, One Woman Band.
The Mystix – ‘TruVine’
APPLE MUSIC
Fronted by one of the most distinctive lead singers in the biz (Jo Lily), The Mystix are Blues-Rockin’ again. Their latest album’s a mix of new material and some guest-star-spiced updated hits. And I gotta say it cooks! Jo’s voice mesmerizes me. (And it’s why speakers come with woofers.)
