Selwyn Birchwood – ‘Exorcist’
APPLE MUSIC
Selwyn Birchwood is working out some things. And what we get out of the deal is an album of genre-pushing, contemporary Blues. His ultra-gritty voice and super guitar work are a given. But there’s some imaginative songwriting going on here too. And it really makes this record stand out. Selwyn’s one of the most distinctive Bluesmen on the scene today. Don’t pass him by. [PREVIEW]
“Gov’t Mule – Making Peace…Like A River”
YOUTUBE
Here’s a 9-minute video-glimpse into how Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule went about creating their new album, ‘Peace…Like A River.’ Great behind-the-scenes stuff. Including Warren describing his choices for all the guest performers on the record. Warren says, “It sounds like where we are as a band right now.” (This should be a good one, due next week!) [VIDEO]
“Keb’ Mo’: Back Fence Rambles with a Blues Sage”
AMERICANBLUESSCENE
This Keb’ Mo’ interview, by “warrior music journalist” Don Wilcock, reads like two old buddies just hangin’ out. It’s simple, straightforward, and smooth – just like Keb’s music. Combined, these two have over a century of music experience. And it’s great to get a little peek in on their conversation. [ARTICLE]
Texas Scratch – ‘Texas Scratch’
APPLE MUSIC
Wow! It took a long time, but this album finally found the light of day. Texas Scratch is a power trio consisting of Jim Suhler, Buddy Whittington, and Jeff Simon. They got together 13 years ago (with some friends) and knocked out this record. Then … nothing. No buzz, no release, just whispers. Of course the fellas were busy working – with George Thorogood, John Mayall, Savoy Brown – so maybe it slipped their mind? Anyway, better late than never. This is real good Blues Rock. (Eat it up.) Eric Clapton – “Key To The Highway”
YOUTUBE
A classic Blues tune from the one-and-only Eric Clapton. It’s a newly released video from his 1991 shows at London’s Albert Hall (’24 Nights’). A little teaser for the upcoming release of ‘The Definitive 24 Nights,’ which is gonna be big – essentially each of his individual Blues, Rock, and Orchestral shows from that gig. It won’t be cheap either, but if you’re a Clapton fan, this is gonna be real hard to pass up. (Hey, is that Buddy Guy & Robert Cray I see in the band?) [VIDEO]
Big D & Captain Keys – ‘Tales Of Friendship’
APPLE MUSIC
Got a little side project here. Two BluesBones members (Nico De Cock and Edwin Risbourg) recorded a lean little piano & vocal album under the name Big D & Captain Keys. They covered a mix of tunes from Sam Cooke to Tom Waits, and made it all feel intimate. Like something you’d hear if you stumbled into a little piano bar on a backstreet somewhere. (Me likey.)
