Vintage Trouble – ‘Heavy Hymnal’
APPLE MUSIC
Musical spontaneous combustion! This record by Vintage Trouble goes BANG from the get-go and sizzles the whole way through. Not straight Blues, but that influence is here, along with several others, all balanced just right. The content, the pacing, the musicianship – it’s all there. I think this one’s a stunner. (Definitely worth a listen.) [PREVIEW]
Joe Bonamassa – “Twenty-Four Hour Blues”
YOUTUBE
Coming this Fall from the Bluesman that never sleeps (Joe Bonamassa) – a new Blues album, ‘Blues Deluxe Vol. 2.’ His “Vol. 1” was 20 years ago and Joe’s marking the moment by recording a whole new set of Blues tunes. This video’s the first taste. A cover of the Bobby “Blue” Bland hit, “Twenty-Four Hour Blues.” [VIDEO]
Eric Clapton – ‘The Definitive 24 Nights (Live)’
APPLE MUSIC
Imagine over 5 hours of Eric Clapton’s live music culled from 24 historic Albert Hall performances. Now imagine it remixed and remastered into multiple CDs as well as a 2-hour theatrical film. That’s what we have here. A prodigious achievement that crowns a monumental career. (A collector’s item if there ever was one.) [PREVIEW]
Ella Fitzgerald – ‘Ella Sings The Blues’
APPLE MUSIC
If you’re in the mood for a master class in singing, you’ll like this Ella Fitzgerald compilation. Universal Music Group has cherry picked 25 “Blues” tunes from Ella’s long recording career and smushed them into one album. You get lots of luscious big band arrangements and of course, you get Ella’s singular, incomparable voice. (A reminder of what greatness truly sounds like.) [PREVIEW]
The South Austin Moonlighters – “Deltaman”
YOUTUBE
If this video is any indication, The South Austin Moonlighters’ next album (‘From Here To Home’) will satisfy big time. I love the harmonies here. And, since every band member sings as well as writes, there should be plenty more where that came from. Looking forward to it. [VIDEO]
Duke Robillard & His All-Star Band – ‘Six Strings Of Steel’
APPLE MUSIC
More than most, Duke Robillard is comfortable in just about any Blues setting – from Jump to Jazz. But then his Blues resume is almost mythological. He’s a Roomful of Blueser, a Fabulous Thunderbirdman, and he’s toured with Bob Dylan. So Duke goes old-school here and touches on as many styles as he could fit into a 12-song album. (Goes down real smooth too.) [PREVIEW]
