Ghost Hounds – ‘First Last Time’

This is the 4th album from Ghost Hounds, one of the best-sounding groups on the Blues-Rock scene today.

Their debut album was only 4 years ago (‘Roses Are Black’) and it was terrific. But the thing is, they’ve been maturing as a band on every album. So this latest record, for me, is their best one yet.

I couldn’t spin it just once.

Bending Genres To Their Will

You won’t find a straight Blues tune on the album but you can sense the Blues influences. You can also taste the Southern Rock flavors. And was that a little Country I just heard?

But the glue that binds it all together is pure Rock & Roll.

No matter what they’re doing, Ghost Hounds is rockin’ it.

The band’s been touring with the likes of The Rolling StonesZZ Top, and even Garth Brooks so I guess it’s no surprise that they’ve become so musically multi-dextrous.

They’re self-assured too. They finished off the album with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Hot Dog” and John Denver’s “Country Roads.” You don’t try that if you’re not confident. (Spoiler Alert: they nailed it too.)

“Never did meet my father, never did have no son. So when my time is over oh, my name is dead and gone.” ~ Kevin Bowe & Thomas Tull (“Last Train To Nowhere”)

The Band

There’s a lot of musical talent on this album that meshes together on every song.

But the standout is lead singer Tré Nation. As a Rock singer, he checks ALL the boxes.

Also, this record has great production. There’s enough sonic space for everyone. It’s a pleasure to be able to key in on all the moving parts.

And the songwriting is 24-karat too. Kevin Bowe and Thomas Tull collaborated on all the originals. Some of them are going to have very long musical shelf-lives.

“You and me, might not be forever. But before you leave let’s sleep on it…together.” ~ Kevin Bowe & Thomas Tull (“Let’s Sleep On It Together”)

The Outro

The short and sweet of it is:  This album is a gem and a muscle-flex of great Blues-Rock.

I bet you’ll spin it more than once too.
